“Should E-Verify Participants Maintain Copies of Employee’s Documents?”
Employers who participate in E-Verify must maintain specific
documents when provided by the employee during the completion of a Form I-9.
These are limited to the following
four documents: I-766 Employment Authorization Document, I-551 Permanent Resident Card, US Passport, and US
Passport Card.
All these documents will automatically generate a request from
E-Verify for the employer to confirm a “Photo-Match” and as they contain an image, they must be maintained by the
employer. Some E-Verify participants find it in their best interests to simply maintain all supporting documents as a
“best practice”.
